Nailed it at last. This is with no TOTP to showcase the songs to the masses.. Great Album artwork as well which always helps with the record shop browsers.. Will this mean a few young gringos from Radio 1 are going to have to give the album tracks a few spins..

A nice little write up from music week:

After reaching No.17 with their 2015 FFS collaboration with Franz Ferdinand, veteran fraternal duo Sparks’ critically acclaimed new album Hippopotamus goes higher still. Debuting at No.7 (5,597 sales) it earns the Mael brothers - Ron (72) and Russell (68) - their first Top 10 album since their back-to-back 1974 breakthrough albums Kimono My House and Propaganda, which peaked at No.4 and No.9 respectively. Sparks have released 23 studio albums and a multitude of compilations but only seven (eight if we include FFS) have charted, most recently Exotic Creatures Of The Deep, which reached No.54 in 2008. The most recent Sparks album before Hippopotamus was 2009's The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman which fell well short of the chart and has sold only 1,266 copies to date.

Jesus! As good as it is that Sparks made no 7, isn't it a sad state of affairs if it took only 5,597 sales to do so ... and that Seduction sold only 1,266?

I wonder: is this just referring to physical copies, or does it count digital too?

Pretty sure that will be all sales ! It's that surprising really as it wasn't really a proper album as such

I don't think there was a physical release in the UK was there??? I know the copies I have are Swedish and US. In fact, I'm not sure it was even available on download either till quite recently.

Hurray! Number 7 in the UK album charts, if I'm reading it right, and number 3 in the vinyl album charts.

I'm ecstatic to find out about this :) it means people of my generation can appreciate the savants of pop music, as long as the DJ's at Radio 1 are willing to play the tracks... the thought of including a 40 year old band in their playlist is tantamount to a heart attack for them.

The promotional campaign has been brilliant. I think that made the difference, otherwise Hippopotamus could have charted significantly lower a la ECOTD. Though, in the current climate it does not take many sales for fanbase acts to strategically land in the top 10 albums [most weeks].

5,597 sales after one week might sound underwhelming initially, but thinking about it more, that is a real achievement for our heroes.
