As a bit of fun.......

Which track on the magnificent Sparks album 'Hippopotamus' would you like for your choice for the next single?

I will happily count up all the votes on the last ding of October 31st 2017, even though I will probably be knees deep in pumpkin pies, ghosts, ghoulies and a whole load of cobwebs & spiders......lol....

Only 1 track now.....no b-sides or 12" remixes.....tell all your friends, get them involved.....

I will start with my own personal choice 'cos I just can't get it out of my head and I think it's just the most charming and cosy song from Sparks since 'My Baby's taking me home'.... 'Scandinavian Design'.....
....actually on a few more listenings....there are already some lovely sleigh bells in there. Throw in a whole lot more sleigh bells, a couple of angels and a santa somewhere and we have ourselves a perfect Sparks Christmas song. I can just imagine the video with Ron & Russell ditching the white dressing gowns and changing Spiderman stylee into striking red Santa suits with Edith Piaf & Mrs Lincoln in the back seats singing along, all in a beautiful sleigh being driven by a whole host of hippo's across the glorious snowy lands of Christmas in Scandinavia......& at the end of the video you get to see the back of the sleigh and it's got written in big letters....AEKI !!!!......get it?......I'm there already.....

I'm sure it's probably already been decided up at the BMG head office but this will be very interesting from the fans point of view I think.......anyway, all in good fun.

Happy Stoptober everyone!!!

Missionary Position would be great - maybe a live version as opposed to the album version but airplay on main radio stations may be limited ( i.e. BBC and Dickaround )

So I would go with I wish you were fun from an ear worm point

I think Mrs Lincoln would be a great single especially with a bit of a remix of the vocal vs synth elements and sharpening up.
Macbeths is my personal favourite track and might also be a good choice because it's different enough to attract attention.
Another very good track is Unaware, which might stand out as a single.
Fun is a good track but I dont think it will make everybody stop and listen.

"Life with the Macbeths" with a nice video of Russell and Rebecca going for it big time ...

The most likely is "I wish you were Fun" for the radio.

Was not the betting that this album was going to have a duet. Ron said its all a "Go-Go".. thinking Jane might pop up again.

Great thread, Kermit.

Personally, I'm torn between Unaware and I Wish You Were Fun.

I love Scandinavian Design, but I'm not sure it's single material (unless rerecorded). Probably Nothing, as good as it is as an album opener, is too slight to be a single.

I know lots of people love Missionary Position, but I don't think it would be strong enough as a single (for me its a weaker track on the album, kind of Propaganda/Kimono-light).

Macbeths is a great album closer, but not likely to get much airplay (unless a single after a successful single); also unlikely to get much airplay would be Bummer and Mrs Lincoln.

OK, now that I've rubbished everyone else's suggestions ...

If I had to chose between Unaware and I Wish You Were Fun ... and both might benefit from modest remixes ... I think Wish You Were Fun just edges it. (Why? Potential Radio 2 airplay, whereas Unaware would be confined to 6Music airplay.)

However, I'm not sure there'll be another 'single' for a bit. I think it would be more likely be timed to mark an occasion, for example, a second-leg European tour in the new year ...

to Velvet Underground,
Lou Reed or Bowie...

Sparks are clearly above the need for singles nowadays.

HOWEVER I am hearing there are some proper hands-in-the-air remixes of Edith Piaf imminent.
