It takes me ages to open or post on this forum. Is it just me or does the database need pruning or something?

It's running OK on my PC, but I do know people (maybe with older computers) who can't get in at all since the website got updated.

Surprisingly today it's faster than other days.

I don't think it's old computers that are to blame. The revamped main website does have flash and that is very hard work for the processor i found out with different flash-websites. Lot's of reasons... ;-)

I still say main bottleneck(s) would be database, server, hostingserver(s)& internetconnection of webhost in that order. Plus any atempts of hackers/spammers/etc to get in.

Well here in Amsterdam, main website opens up fine, logging in to the forum is a bit slow but about acceptable.

Adobe has released a new Shockwave Player 11 maybe that one is to be use (or not). On my 5 year old PC with the latest versions of Java, Flash & Shockwave it seems to be fine.

Maybe your computer needs checking? Something nasty might be eating away all your download speed.

I have a newish computer with 2gb RAM and blah de blah de blah, so its not that. Besides which, all the computer doing is displaying a static html page delivered to by the server, and as that page is just a phpbb forum page, it isn't very sophisticated.

Other forums zip along, this one seems to chugg.

If it's just this forum that can't be reach it is strange. If more website can't be reached than it might be your internetprovider. At times when mine is working on their network it can become very slow for some websites and others just can't be found. But often after a day or two it works fine again.
