There are a bunch of Sparks tunes, when I first heard them I was either repulsed or just not into it. And now I feel exactly the opposite!! Has this happened to other fans?
Some examples (for me):
When you're a French Director
Stravinsky's only hit
Baby Baby can I invade your country
Giddy Giddy
How do I get to Carnegie Hall
the Seduction of Ingmar Bergman
...
Certain songs just grow on you! or they are just so bizarre, you just have to hear them several times before you can really "get" them, right? any other songs this happened to for you? any other theories why this happens?

It took me a few listens to appreciate the songs on Balls.

I admit I struggled a bit when I first heard GS&SV, but now I just couldn't do without! This took a little bit longer to really appreciate it, but now I definitely do.

At first, I thought that Equator was unfit for consumption, but now I love it.

I feel like the reason this happens is that Sparks tunes can go in so many strange ways that our brains, at first listen, are not really prepared to go there. then those paths get worn. and then they become very sweet paths. also, sometimes i don't like songs on the album so much but then i hear them live, and i like them much better- even the album version- afterwards.

I'm still not a huge fan of "Big Boy," but I like it a lot more since I realized it's about this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Boy_Restaurants#The_Big_Boy_mascot

I started out hating Bon Voyage - but after a while I started to love it - and now I can't help it, but I sing along when I hear it every time

Best regards

Is it? I've always thought it was about David & Goliath's biblical story ("The Earth is shaking, so am I", "My name is David, he don't care")... thanks for sharing :)

I truly believe it is David and Goliath, humorously.

And it wouldn't be the first time they do that... which is probably why we do believe that.
For example, "Bon Voyage" is obviously about Noah's ark, and "Something For The Girl With Everything" is probably about the Virgin Mary... So I wouldn't be surprised at another Bible-inspired song.

I don't think Ron or Russell have ever explicitly confirmed that it's about the Big Boy from the Big Boy restaurants, but I prefer to think that because it makes me like the song more. :)

Similarly, I like to think of "Bon Voyage" as a metaphor for a single person watching their friends pair off and get married.

Good one! And it could be both actually, with Ron you never know :)
That's the great thing about clever writing, we all have our own interpretation of it since it's so rich and meaningful.

Something For The Girl With Everything is about a blackmailing girl and attempts to buy her silence.

It clearly is, and that girl being the Virgin Mary would be such an amusing twist.
I'm still intrigued about those "3 wise men" and "imported gifts"... could it just be random?

Um, most decidedly yes.

Out of the blue the other day it made me think (admittedly rather grimly) of people trying to escape the Holocaust. (“Imitate…[x4] they still know it’s you”)
