Oh god what I'm listening to online is absolutely heavenly!!!!!!!!!!![b] What a profound ability Ron has to paint atmosphere in music.

Really impressed. It has beauty with real gusto. And Russell sounds superb throughout!

Surely this magnificient work must hail Ron as one of the greatest composers of this new century? Where is Melvyn Bragg when you need him?

I agree, it is really good, even where I can't understand a word! So atmospheric.

I have to confess that I had a bad feeling about this and thought that there was a serious danger that it wouldn't be very good. I should have had more faith and apologise unreservedly to Ron and Russell for being so sceptical!

Yeah I was sceptical too.

Merely because I never expected them to be able to do such a large project so shortly after the 21 shows. One year for an album is even short for most modern bands!

Lovin' 'He's Home', feels like such a good farewell.

I've just done a round of applause even though there is nobody to hear it! Did anybody else do that?

Actually I have seen so many operas and musicals fall flat, (including those based on the work by Sparks' early inspiration, The Who).

But I am utterly convinced that this is going to be absolutely fantastic performed!!!

And the finale has such a great feeling of a hymn to the inevitable Tinseltown, with all the dialogues...
I got my one request
(He got his one request)
And I am happy, yes
(And he is happy, yes)...

I wasn't sceptical, because I thought of some mixture between their film music (which was great), Sparks of the latest three albumes and maybe some contemporary opera as we know it from Philip Glass (which I know Ron likes).
It turned out beautiful indeed, once again I'm proud of my Sparks.

It is at once new and exciting and yet so familiar and accessible... I need to hear it again...

And John Adams too... there was a short essay of Ron about his understanding of contemporary opera, after seeing "Nixon in China" (it was in The Independent, by 1999 I guess).

No Gilbert& Sullivan here, but I think that wouldn't fit in the feel of Bergman

Guess so :)
I said earlier that I wasn't sceptical - and there was another reason: Ron said months ago that the music for this project came relatively quick and easy, so with nothing of the lengthy effort needed for the regular albums.
Besides, the subject was highly appealing for the Maels, who are too familiar with the Hollywood universe and passionate about Bergman as well (like they said even on the interview which we've just listened to).

On a second listening and trying to follow the translated lyrics, I get why the Maels insist in all the interviews that they didn't want to make fun or to sound disrespectful of Bergman. Some of the lyrics are very humorous, in a dry, Sparksy way... I can't stop laughing. Indeed, Bergman has become here a Sparks character. It's true that it's nothing disrespectful, though.
