I suppose the September issue of many music magazines will be out early August. Would that mean Hippopotamus could get some early reviews or do album reviews usually appear after the release date? 🤔

writer though ...very sloppy written..

Positive review, nice. It'll be interesting to see if the 4 tracks we've heard so far will be considered to be standouts? So curious about Missionary Position. 🤔

Just to clarify my point - I meant no leaks of reviews - everything being done officially and professionally

Great album review by Joseph Ragusta of Under the Radar. Comparison to David Bowie in terms of "chameleon-like" "genre bending" "approach to albums" really articulates the bewildering innovation of Sparks work for curious readers. It will more than resonate with Sparks fans. During 21x21, what struck me about Sparks fans was how many were devoted to Bowie and Sparks above all else. With Bowie now having sadly slipped away from this world, I wonder if it feels lonely at the top for Sparks? MiniPop

I just stood in the newsagent and read the Spex review. I thought it was a nice review actually. Not much new info on the tracks, apparently the opener is about becoming forgetful in old age and French Film Director is a waltz with accordion

given the diversity of what we've heard so far - each song seemingly evocative of yet a different era - this may be their modern-day Indiscreet. or not. who knows? I just can't wait to hear it

My Finnish is so-so, but here's a brief excerpt:

"The world's oldest teen intellectuals. You can forget about the brothers running out of ideas. After FFS, Hippopotamus continues the renaissance and is easily their best album since Li'l Beethoven. If there's anything one can criticize, it's 15 songs of surrealism might be 3 songs too many. Sparks haven't really attempted anything truly heartfelt since "When Do I Get To Sing My Way". Were they to try, the result might yield a perfect 10 score. 8.6/10

I disagree with him there, I thought "The Angels" was pretty moving.

The September issue of hi-fi magazine "stereoplay" features a highlighted review which even features the words "the best album in their carreer".

The new issue of Uncut magazine gives the album 8/10. It's quite small review.

However, there's also a 3-page feature, 'albumby album': Ron and Russell discussing a selection of their albums

the review says maybe their best album
and rates:
Music 9/10
Sound 8/10 (a great rating for a hifi magazine!)

but the most important statement there:

SPARKS ARE A PIECE OF ART!!

I gave the three new songs a listen last night; "What The Hell Is It This Time?" shows huge promise, despite "Hippopotamus" being a bit lightweight for my tastes.

I normally prefer to wait for the hype to go down a little so we can judge it on it's own merits, so far the Magazines are looking hopeful so finger crossed!
