Well. Hippopotamus had 15 tracks and for that very reason l adored it (plus the music was great) so... I wonder why the 4 EP songs were sent adrift all on their own.....
In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter but it just intrigues me...

You lose a bit of quality on vinyl LP's when there's more than 21/22 minutes a side. With there being such a push for vinyl at launch, they probably wanted to keep the sound as sweet as possible

That's a fair point Dinky.....
Here's what Ron says about the EP release in the Quietus interview

"We felt that to force so many songs onto somebody's attention span might detract from everything"

They can force as many songs my way as they want.....😂

I finally got my copy (I ordered it along with the Indiscreet/Big Beat CD so had to wait for that release date to get them both). I do like it, but on first few listens I don't find the tracks grab me as much as those on the LP: I can't actually sing them in my head yet (except for Porcupine). Am I the only one who thinks that Mess Up was originally written using a different word but they (or the record company) thought better of it?! I will keep listening though.

Also, I found this in an article from a month ago which I haven't seen anywhere else:
Quote:
The EP was recorded in response to the "phenomenal reaction" to their 28th studio album, MAD!, which gave them a career-best UK chart position. The band shared that they didn't want the momentum to end, so they made a "hasty but intense retreat to the studio" to record the EP for everyone who "isn't yet MAD! enough."

Those Mael brothers are slippery customers, they'll give a dozen different answers to the same question......😂
As for the Mess Up phrase, l think it was probably the original lyric and goes rather well with " 'fess up " later in the song.
I feel they use their expletives sparingly for maximum effect....

I thought the songs on Madder! were top notch, especially 'They' and 'Porcupine'. 'They' has a tone which the band don't do all that often, and 'Porcupine' is a lot of fun, and is the kind of tune no other band could come up with. It's amazing that the brothers keep coming up with such fresh ideas, especially considering they've had a packed year already. I think the EP format allows the smaller number of songs to each stand out, whereas sometimes a song can get lost on a longer album.

The more l listen to 'They' the more l delve into a very dark bitter and truly beautiful song....
In a way 'They' encapsulates the difficulty with every Sparks song (well, most of them) one superficial listening is NEVER enough.....
